Dear Mr. Scobie,
FRANCIS SCOBIE, TAILOR
Thank you for your e-mail of 6 July.
A search has been made in the library collections and the Surrey marriage index and the following information has been found.
According to the index, Francis Scobie married Mary Masters on 21 February
1804 at Petersham, which is a little village right next door to Richmond (and, apropos of nothing in particular, where Captain Vancouver is buried).
I cannot say where they came from, since neither of them is set down in the parish register as 'of this parish'. However, since Richmond is right next door, they may well have come from there, though why they should be married at Petersham is unclear -perhaps there was something slightly clandestine about it! On the other hand, the parish clerk might have been particularly pernickety about the phrase 'of this parish' (OTP), taking it literally to mean that someone was actually born there rather than just living there.
Several books of Cobham history have been written by David Taylor, the
acknowledged expert on the village. Cobham, a History (Phillimore 2003)
and Cobham Houses (Appletons 2001) give some details ?maybe all that it is possible to know, about Francis Scobie at Cobham.
He moved to Cobham in the "early 1800s", by which I would guess that the exact date is unknown ?but we know it was after 1806 anyway. His house and business were in Church Street, in a house now called 'Overbye'. This is particularly lucky inasmuch as practically the whole of the main High Street at Cobham has been redeveloped, whereas Church Street, which is now a conservation area, retains many of its historic buildings, including 'Overbye'. It is believed that outbuildings at the rear of the house were used for Francis Scobie's tailors business. He died in 1847 and is buried in Cobham churchyard, only a few yards away.
I have been unable to find any reference to his existence at Richmond. It might be possible to find him in an electoral register, but he may not have been eligible to vote, suffrage then being far from universal! Richmond upon Thames, which was then in Surrey, is now a London borough and has its own Local Studies Library, which I would recommend you contact, as they may be able to give you some information about the Scobies at Richmond. Their email address is e-mail address
I hope this information is helpful to your research.
This enquiry has been answered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act (2000), Data Protection Act (1998) and the Environmental Information Regulations.
Yours sincerely
