Ritchie, the candidate for secretary of state, withdrew, and Christian Rathman was substituted for him. According to a story told in the Nebraska Advertiser of September 12, 1872, Ritchie, who was only a poor mechanic, was frightened out of the contest by George W. Ambrose, who told him that it would cost him $2,000 for campaign expenses; but the story has been doubted.¹²
