| Note* | | From 'The Genealogies of the Families of Braintree, Ma.' by Waldo C.Sprague. He first appears in town records in 1700 when he was appointed one of acommittee to run the town line between Braintree and Weymouth, and Braintree and Dorchester, and did the latter again in 1703. In 1708 he was elected to act as constable in place of Thomas Copeland, deceased. In 1700 he was one of the one hundred purchasers of the common lands of Boston, now chiefly in the town of Randolph and Holbrook, and was granted a share of these lands. Where he lived previous to this time is not on record but soon after this purchase he settled on the 19th & 20th lots of the Sixth Division, south of Great Pond where Littlefield's saw mill wasan important land mark often mentioned in deeds and other documents. The dam and outline of the unused mill pond are still to be seen (1950) near where Norroway river or brook enters Great Pond. His descendants remained on these lands for many years, one of them being his great granddaughter Beulah (Littlefield) Hunt who died on part of the homestead in 1873 aged 104 years. His house was probably the one sold by his son Nathaniel in 1743 (S.D. 66-122) which stood at the north end of the lot on a knoll by Blue Hill River at Quincy line where the Howard Johnson restaurant now is. Elizabeth wife of Edmund Littlefield was baptized and owned the covenant Jun.13,1703, and his children Mary (by 1st wife)(who also owned the covenant), Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Abigail, Anna, Sarah, and Lydia were baptized Sep.5,1703, and Deborah baptized Dec.16,1705. Edmund Littlefield of Braintree gave power of attorney to son Samuel at Cape Porpoise, Wells, Me. 1716 (York deeds 12-240). S.P.20-452, Inventory, May 16,1718: Homestead & land with 2 barns, house, 1/4 part of a sawmill etc. S.P.9-218 N.S. - Elizabeth Littlefield, widow & Nathaniel Littlefield, yeoman, administrators of Edmund Littlefield & bonded with Samuel Spear & Thomas White, May 30,1718. |

| Note* | | BIOGRAPHY: The Littlefield family is one of the oldest families in NewEngland. This line traces back to Edmund of Wells, ME. Edmund came to Boston around 1636. He then went to Exeter, NH with the Reverend John Wheelwright, and was one of the original settlers there. In about 1641,he went to Wells, ME and erected the first permanent structure there. Here is a picture of the plaque erected at the site of his sawmill and apicture of the falls on which he built his sawmill. At one point the Littlefield's owned all of Ogunquit, ME and most of Wells, ME. Unfortunately, none of this land made it down to me. My line removed to Northern, NH after the Revolutionary War, and then moved to Southern NH. Thomas and Anne were twins URL: http://www.smartsites.com/littla/Littlefield/litlefie_hm.htmhttp://lombardo.simplenet.com/personal/genealogy/d0001/g0000076.html#17974 http://www.humboldt1.com/~cealbert/html/fam01378.htm http://home.maine.rr.com/red/html/dat187.htm#13 OCCUPATION: Clothier BIOGRAPHY: Came to New England in abt 1636, probably with his two eldestsons. On record as being in Boston in Spring of 1637, and in 1638. BIOGRAPHY: His wife and six children followed on the Bevis in May of1638, with servants John Knight and Hugh Durdal. BIOGRAPHY: His name appears on a paper for the purpose of government, called the Exeter Combination, in Exeter, NH, signed on 5 Jun 1639. He was granted 21 acres of land there. The land was in two lots in the 1st div. of uplands BIOGRAPHY: He moved to Wells, ME before 1643. There is a plaque in Wells, ME stating that his saw and gristmill were the first permanent structures in the town. The plaque is next to the Webhannet Falls on the site of his mill. BIOGRAPHY: On 14 July 1643, Thomas Gorges granted him 100 acres adjacent to the mill and the neck of the marsh between that and Webhannet River. BIOGRAPHY: The 1st yr. he was agent for R. Vines to give poss. BIOGRAPHY: In Nov 1645, he and John Wadleigh were granted 200 acres on Southwest side of the Ogunquit River, not intrenching on town of Wells. BIOGRAPHY: Took oath of allegiance on 5 Jul 1653 at Wells, ME BIOGRAPHY: Authorized 1654 to sell wine and strong liq. to Inds. BIOGRAPHY: Selectm. 1654, 1657 BIOGRAPHY: Will 11 Dec, 1661; fam. compromise signed 17 Dec. by s.Francis sr., his mo. and bros. Thomas and Francis jr.; inv. 24 Dec. BIOGRAPHY: About the lawsuit of 1635/6, which named Edmund and Nicholasas defendants: BIOGRAPHY: The amount in the lawsuit seems to be 16 pounds. The lawsuit had something to do with Edmund buying some wool and not paying for it. His brother, Nicholas, also named in the lawsuit did reply to the effec tthat he didn't know anything about it and that Edmund did the buying. BIOGRAPHY: The only further thing I know about the Isle of Wight Court Case againsst Edmund of Tichfield and Nicholas his brother is that Nicholas answered 17 Jan 1636 that this brother had been in trade many years as a clothier buying wool in various places and the defandant knew not whence the wool came, whether from the complainant or other; that he bought wool of his brother qand di not inquire as to the source; and heknows nothing beyond this, and prays for damages unjustly incurred in thesuit. BIOGRAPHY: The complaint of Stephen March of Newport, Isle of Wight(Hants) Esq against Edmund Littlefield of Titchfield, clothier, Anne, hiswife and Nicholas Littlefield, his brother sworn to 12 February,11Charles I (Feb 1635/6) is apparently on file at Court of Requests,Charles I, Bundle 77 , Part 4.
